Forest Dunes Golf Club
Your “Bucket List” experience at Forest Dunes is purely a golf one. You won’t find a pool or spa here, just 54 memorable golf holes cut through the northern Michigan forest. Some say we are in the middle of nowhere, but that’s what we like about it. You are able to escape and experience small town hospitality in our three different types of lodging accommodations and exquisite restaurant. Guests staying in the lodge sleep just 35 yards from the first tee.
Renowned golf course architect Tom Doak has golfers turned around in northern Michigan...both literally and figuratively. Doak and the team at Renaissance Golf Design have laid out a “reversible” golf course called The Loop.
Golfers playing The Loop head out on the course's Black routing in a clockwise rotation one day. The next, everyone turns around and plays the Red routing in a counter- clockwise manner.
The Loop - RED
The Red routing plays counter-clockwise around The Loop, starting to the right of the 18th green and playing toward the red flag in the distance. There are red flags on the front nine and white flags on the back, but if you're ever unsure of which way to go, keep right except to pass!
The Red is a more traditional design, in the sense that the starting holes give you a bit of time to loosen up.
The Loop - BLACK
The Black routing plays clockwise around The Loop, starting to the left of the 18th green and playing away to the white flag on the horizon. You'll play to white flags for the front nine, and red flags for the back, just like The Old Course at St. Andrews. If you're ever unsure of which way to go, keep left!
The Black Course is a less traditional setup, with a tough start and an easier finish.
Forest Dunes Golf Course
Nestled on 500 acres of heavily wooded land within the Huron National Forest, Forest Dunes has become one of the country's most peaceful and exciting golf experiences.
In this pristine setting, British Open Champion Tom Weiskopf designed a parkland-style classic with modern enhancements.
“Forest Dunes replicates classic style and emulates a risk/reward involvement on most every hole,” Weiskopf said. “I consider this golf course to be in the top three which I have ever been involved in the United States.”
HillTop (a putting course)
A popular amenity at Forest Dunes is the HillTop putting course. Located just west of the practice facility, The HillTop is nearly 2-acres with an 18-hole course routed throughout the undulating terrain. There is no cost to play the HillTop and tee times are not required. Just come as you are and bring your putter and a ball.
Par 3 Course

To facilitate a firm, fast ground game, the course will feature fescues from the tees to the edges of the receptive bentgrass greens where golfers can use strategic slopes and banks to feed shots toward the hole. Rhebb says the greens will take on a variety of subtle shapes, many being bowl-shaped and some resembling catcher's mitts or table tops.
“When you come to Forest Dunes, we want you to have a good time,” says Thompson, who says he'll happily allow music, bare feet and eightsomes on the new par-three course if that's what it takes to make the game more accessible and fun. “What Keith and Riley are building is going to bring a new life and energy to the property. It's going to bring people together and make their time more enjoyable.”
LAKE AUSABLE LODGE
The Lake AuSable Lodge is located just 35 yards from the first tee of the Forest Dunes course and steps away from the clubhouse. The two-story lodge features 11 standard rooms and two suites. It reflects the same Adirondack architectural theme as the nearby clubhouse, using hardwoods, cedar shake siding and stone on the exterior.
Located within walking distance of the clubhouse is the Forest Dunes villa village. We have different villa offerings, including both two and four-bedroom configurations.
Forest Dunes offers several cottages located throughout the property, including two on Lake AuSable and four on the Forest Dunes course.cottage image These full, luxury homes range between three and five bedrooms and sleep between four and eight individuals in their own beds.
